MAKING THE GRADE

MAKING THE GRADE

I have faith
that if I just keep trying
really hard to do my best
someday they will hang me

with magnets at my wrists

on that great refrigerator
in the sky, a gold star stuck
to my chest, and with red
marker a smiley face hastily
scrawled across my sun-bleached
skull picked clean

by greedy birds at the towers
of silence.
