ELLIPSES

ELLIPSES

The late afternoon sunshine knifes
through the blinds
of the western window, cutting
bright lines

across the desk where my head
has been resting
for hours.

I awaken
to find the stain
of crimson wine spreading
across the pages of the day’s
work, obscuring the scrawled

words
smeared and dark

but legible
through the mess.

The glass is unbroken, lying
on its side, a glinting crystal
in the setting sun.

Setting it aright
there are still a couple swallows
left.

Too late

to do anything
else but blot the pages dry
sip out the rest of the day
and

edit.
